Ship Fighting Giant Waves

Gary Robertshaw took incredible photographs depicting a U.S. Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat fighting for her life against a set of two, or possibly three giant waves in Morro Bay, California (photos used by permission). The storm produced waves 15-20 foot high... here is what Gary has to say:

"I did see these approaching in the distance, however I had a considerably higher vantage point than they did. By the time they could spot these waves from the boat, I seriously doubt they had many choices as to what action to take. The first wave of the set passed by them without incident, but the second, much larger one followed very quickly. The fact that no one was hurt or killed, and that the boat made it through and was immediately operational really attests to the competence of the crew and the equipment."

SOS! A Sinking Barge!

On Thursday morning, Hong Kong residents called the emergency service and police and claimed that they had seen a sinking barge with cargo in Victoria Bay.

Everybody was aware of the news, but a little later it became clear that the barge was not sinking. It was specially submerged in order to unload concrete caisson.

This is how they usually work when transporting heavy loads. The caisson was then sunk to the bottom of the bay for further technical works.

Drug War in Rio De Jeneiro

Where would Brazilian drug dealers hide? They would hole up in the most dangerous slums in Rio. This was what Rio de Janeiro policemen reported. So they held a raid on the shantytown of Alemao after they asked drug traffickers to surrender, who, of course, refused to give in. Nearly 200 people have been arrested or detained, and more than 96 buses and cars have been burned during this operation in Rio de Janeiro, the city that will host the final match of the 2014 World Cup as well as the 2016 Olympics. Inside this post, you can see the photographs that show the operation itself, the reaction of local residents on a drug war.
